World Suicide Prevention Day –
September 10, 2020
World Suicide Prevention Day is observed on September 10th each year. Every 40 seconds, someone takes their own life which is equivalent to about 800,000 worldwide every year. Suicide is the leading cause of death for people ages 15 to 29 and for every suicide that results in death, there are as many as 40 attempted suicides.
One of the main goals of World Suicide Prevention Day is to increase awareness about suicidal behaviors and how to effectively prevent them. It is a reminder that society needs consistent and increasing advocacy for mental health resources so that people struggling with mental health disorders can find the help they need.
By starting conversation and directing help to those who need it, we can help prevent suicides and save lives. Providing support services, talking about suicide, reducing means of self-harm, and following up with loved ones are just some of the actions we can take to help others.
